How to Measure Copper Pipe Size: Nominal OD, Wall Thickness, Types K/L/M

Put a caliper on the outside of the tube before you order anything. Digital caliper (preferred)

Open the jaws, place them across the full width of the tube end on the outside surface, and read the OD. A 6-inch digital caliper offers accuracy to 0.001 inch, which is enough to separate 1/2-inch (0.625 in) tube from 5/8-inch (0.750 in) tube without ambiguity. Tape measure or ruler

If no caliper is available, lay the tape across the outside of the tube from one edge to the other. Keep the tape perpendicular to the tube axis; any tilt increases the reading. String or soft wire

Metric vs inch sizing and international standards

Outside North America, copper tube is often described by metric outer diameter. The common metric designations line up closely with imperial CTS values: 15 mm is close to 1/2-inch CTS (15.875 mm), 22 mm is close to 3/4-inch (22.225 mm), and 28 mm is close to 1-inch (28.575 mm). In practice, the OD difference is less than 1 mm, but it is enough to matter when you mix a metric tube with an imperial fitting.

The safest practice is to compare measured OD values, not product names. The measurement does not end with the nominal size. A few final checks prevent expensive mismatches:

• Confirm the wall thickness on used lines. A tube that has been repeatedly sanded or reamed may no longer match the original type.
• Look for the manufacturer stamp on hard-drawn tube. The stamp usually shows size, type, and the applicable standard.
• If you are mating a new fitting to an existing line, measure the tube OD at the exact point where the fitting will seat. Dents, corrosion, or a previous solder joint can change the local dimension.
• When the tube is annealed and unmarked, assume nothing; measure both OD and wall thickness.

Once the OD and type are confirmed, the nominal size and the fitting selection are determined. If you work with metric specifications, your supplier should be able to confirm the correct metric-size copper tubing designation against your measured OD.
