Fin Tube (High/Low)

Maximizing External Surface Area for Ultimate Thermal Exchange

Fin tubes, categorized into high-fin and low-fin variants, represent the pinnacle of extended-surface heat transfer technology. At Zhejiang Jingliang, we manufacture these tubes by cold-rolling the exterior of a plain copper tube to "extrude" fins directly from the parent metal. This "integral finning" process ensures there is no thermal resistance between the tube wall and the fins, which is a common failure point in "tension-wrapped" or "welded-fin" alternatives. Low-fin tubes typically feature 19 to 40 fins per inch with heights under 1.5mm, designed specifically for shell-and-tube heat exchangers where the external fluid has a lower heat transfer coefficient than the internal fluid. High-fin tubes, on the other hand, feature much taller fins and are primarily used in air-cooled applications where the surface area must be drastically increased to compensate for the poor thermal properties of air compared to liquids.

The engineering logic behind fin tubes is rooted in the "efficiency of space." By increasing the external surface area by 2 to 10 times, a much smaller heat exchanger can achieve the same thermal duty as a large, bulky smooth-tube unit. Our production line uses high-precision rolling stands that maintain the structural integrity of the "root" of the fin, ensuring the tube can still withstand high internal pressures. We offer these in C12200 copper, as well as copper-nickel alloys for marine environments. For high-fin applications, we also provide "bimetallic" options where aluminum fins are rolled onto a copper base tube. Every meter of our finned tubing undergoes rigorous dimensional checks, including fin pitch, fin height, and wall thickness under the fin (the "root diameter"), ensuring that your thermal calculations translate perfectly into real-world performance.

Oil Refineries, Air Coolers, and Power Systems

Low-fin copper tubes are the industry standard for "Shell and Tube Heat Exchangers" in the petrochemical and HVAC sectors, particularly in chillers where the refrigerant evaporates on the shell side. High-fin tubes are extensively used in "Air-Cooled Heat Exchangers" (Fin-Fans) for cooling engine oil, compressed air, or process steam in remote areas where water cooling is unavailable. They are critical in "Dry Cooling Towers" for power plants and "Charge Air Coolers" for large marine diesel engines. In the renewable energy sector, they are used in "Geothermal Evaporators" and "Waste Heat Recovery" systems (ORC cycles) to capture energy from low-temperature exhaust gases. Additionally, they are found in "Oil Coolers" for hydraulic machinery and "Steam Radiators" for industrial space heating, where the tall fins allow for massive heat rejection in a compact airflow path.

Compact Design and Lifetime Thermal Integrity

The primary advantage of integral fin tubes is "Zero Thermal Contact Resistance," as the fins are part of the tube itself and cannot loosen due to thermal cycling. This leads to "Consistent Performance" over decades of operation. The "Reduced Equipment Footprint" is a massive benefit; using finned tubes allows for smaller, lighter heat exchangers, which "Lower Structural Support Costs" and save valuable space on offshore rigs or in mechanical rooms. Our tubes offer "Superior Fouling Resistance" compared to wrapped fins, as the smooth rolled transitions are easier to clean with high-pressure water. The "Enhanced Mechanical Strength" provided by the finning process acts as a reinforcement, allowing the tube to resist vibration better than plain tubes. Furthermore, the "Increased Heat Transfer Coefficient" significantly reduces the "Mean Temperature Difference" (MTD) required, making the entire thermal cycle more energy-efficient and reducing the carbon footprint of the facility.

Specialized Packaging for Fin Protection

Fins are delicate and can be easily crushed. We ship fin tubes in "Custom-Built Wooden Crates" with individual plastic or foam separators for every single tube to ensure no fin-to-fin contact occurs during transit. Payment is 30% T/T and 70% L/C at sight. We provide "Fin Geometry Verification Reports" and "Mill Test Certificates" for every order. Shipping is via Ningbo Port, with specific "Fragile" handling instructions. For long tubes (up to 12 meters), we use reinforced steel-frame crates to prevent sagging. Our logistics team is expert in ensuring that your high-performance tubing arrives with the fins in pristine, factory-rolled condition.

  • Q: Can I get "Unfinned" (Plain) ends on the tubes?
  • A: Yes, we provide custom plain sections at the ends (and even in the middle) for easy insertion into tube sheets and support baffles.
  • Q: How do I clean integral fin tubes?
  • A: High-pressure water jetting or chemical cleaning is generally effective. Because the fins are integral, they are much more durable during the cleaning process than wrapped fins.
